Symphony of Lights Walk!

Symphony of Lights (map)

Selected By: Mary

Join us again for a "walk-thru" of the Symphony of Lights! As Howard County residents know, this is "a spectacular display of more than 70 larger-than-life, animated and stationary light creations." Now in its 16th year, the Symphony of Lights is designed for drive-thru's, but the sponsors have made walk-thru's available for groups of 25 or more before the drive-thru's begin. We did this last year and it was a lot of fun! (See the 2008 photos and comments.)

It will be best to begin walking at 4:45 when it's dark enough to see the lights, but please arrive between 4:00-4:30 so we can collect the money and waivers. If the weather is agreeable, we will plan on some refreshments and social time. We MUST plan to be finished by 5:45 so the cars can come through. The walk is 1.4 miles long and a little hilly in spots.

Please read the following carefully so that you bring everything needed for the walk:

COSTS
$8 per person
Please bring this as cash--with exact change. If you really must write a check, you can only write one for the $5 donation payable to the Howard Hospital Foundation. The rest should be cash.

RULES
Each participant must sign and bring the CDOG Symphony of Lights 2009 - Waiver, that will go to the Howard Hospital Foundation representative. We must complete the walk by 5:45 PM, as cars will take the course at 6 PM. Each person must stay on the path. Please do not touch the displays as the bulbs are extremely hot, intense enough to cause burns. And I know we don't need reminding, but we must be extra sure to pick up all poop.

WAIVERS
Please go to the Files section and print out the CDOG Symphony of Lights 2009 - Waiver. Each walker must have a signed waiver of responsibility which will be collected before the walk. A representative from the Howard Hospital Foundation will meet us, explain a few rules, collect the money and waivers, and get us started.

DIRECTIONS & PARKING
From I-95, take Route 32 West (exit 38-B toward Columbia); exit at Route 29 North (toward Columbia Town Center); proceed to Exit 18-B (Broken Land Parkway) and follow signs to the Merriweather Post Pavilion entrance on the right. One you enter, we will guide you for parking. Please remember that your car must be out of the parking area before 6PM. Cars will be lined up and ready to start driving through at 6PM.

VOLUNTEERS
We had a big crowd last year and need help with directing the cars, collecting waivers and money, serving refreshments, etc. Please let me know if you can volunteer to help and I'll send detailed instructions as the time gets closer. You would need to arrive by 3:45 - 4:00 pm.

It was a lot of fun to walk through. Loved the opportunity to mingle with other dogs and their people! The donuts and cider were yummy, particularly on this cold afternoon. Also, the information sent prior to the walk was wonderful and spot on! Just one suggestion for next year: the parking attendants were really unnecessary with such a small group (I think last year there were more people). Also, the raffle was a great idea and unexpected perk, but I had no idea when the numbers were called.

We had a great time. The name badges were nice. It seemed to take a little long getting started.

It was fun meeting up for this event. I had never heard of the symphony of lights so this was my first time. I helped out with the registering and that was fun too as I got to meet most people very quickly. I would like to commend on Mary, she really organised it so well because everybody brought along what they needed to which made the whole process so much easier. I learn a lot from Mary and hopefully I ll be able to organise an event of myself soon.

It was great to meet more members and dogs! The lights and weather were great, though the route was muddy.

Walk was nice. It was well organized although I don't think they needed as much help as they hired
