Grist Mill Trail - Patapsco State Park

This location is shown only to members

Last month, the Maryland Dept of Natural Resources relaxed its restrictions on allowing pets in state parks. This means that dogs are now allowed in Patapsco State Park in areas that were formerly prohibited.

So, let's check out the Grist Mill Trail!

This is a very beautiful, easy, paved, flat, shady, wheelchair-accessible trail that follows the Patapsco River. We'll start at Lost Lake and walk 1.5 miles to the Swinging Bridge, and then return, for a total of 3 miles. There is no need to cross the Swinging Bridge on this walk--but you can check it out if you're interested. (My dogs had no problem, but I found it a wee bit scary if I looked down between the slats.)

A few notes:
- There is a $2 per person admission fee to enter the park.
- The park opens at 9 am. Plan to be there at opening and then meet at the lot (see below) at 9:15.
- I will try to supply some refreshments after the walk. (Please consider a small donation to help toward Meetup costs.)
- We must keep our dogs leashed and pick up poop. See the new Maryland Park Pet Policy, effective April 9, 2010.
- Those who want a longer walk can continue along the Grist Mill Extension Trail for another 1.25 miles, making the total walk 5.5 miles.
- This trail is also popular with cyclists, so be prepared to yield the right-of-way. (I found them to be very friendly.)
- Feel free to explore more of the park afterwards or just relax around the lake.

WHERE TO MEET

Use Google Maps (or Mapquest, etc.) to get to the park entrance at 5120 South Street, Arbutus, MD. It is basically off US Rt 1, just south of the exit for I-195. After you enter the park and pay admission at the booth, continue down the road until it ends at a T and you see the Welcome sign. Turn right toward Glen Artney, and then turn left along the road to Glen Artney. You'll pass a parking lot on the left with a sign that says "No Pets." Continue on to the next lot with a sign that says "Pet Parking Area." This is a large lot and we'll meet here to begin the walk.

Nice walk on a paved path from the parking lot up to the Swinging Bridge and back. Very peaceful even with runners and bikes sharing the road.
