Savage Mill "Paws-n-Pastries" - and swimming!

The Dog Days of August are here! Time to schedule walks with good ol' swimmin' spots for dogs. This is optional, of course. Cody wouldn't dream of getting his little paws wet, while Riley can't stay out.

We'll start this walk at the historic Bollman Truss Bridge, built in 1869 and moved to Savage in 1887. It's the last remaining bridge of its type in the world. The walk on the Savage Historic Mill Trail is an easy, flat, shaded, scenic 1.5 miles, round-trip. The hardest part is the 30 or so stairs we'll take from the parking lot to the bakery (but it will be worth it).

After the walk, we'll head up to Bonaparte's Breads in the Savage Mill center. There is a great outdoor patio area right in front with lots of tables. You can buy a snack or a full lunch at the bakery and then bring it outside. The area is enclosed and usually fairly quiet, so our dogs will be safe from any traffic.

We did this walk a few months ago, so check the page for comments and pics.

For those interested in continuing on a longer walk afterwards, we will give you directions for more very nice trails in Savage Park.

Bring enough water for you and your dog, and dress sensibly for the weather.

DIRECTIONS TO THE BOLLMAN TRUSS BRIDGE:
(If using Mapquest or a GPS, try entering 8680 Foundry Street, Savage, MD and it will get you there.)

From Route 32:
Take exit 12 toward Laurel.
Go about 0.4 miles and turn Right on Washington Blvd. (U.S. 1 South).
Go 0.5 miles and turn Right on Gorman Road.
Go 0.4 miles and turn Right on Foundry Street.

The bridge is big and red and you can't miss it. Park in the lot right near the bridge. We'll gather there.

Had a great time! I filmed a little video of the pooches swimming, but haven't figured out yet how to load video to the Meetup site. In the meantime, check it out on my blog site, www.columbiadogtalk.com

We had a great time! It was nice meeting all the dogs and owners. The trail and water were great, too.

"Excellent" all the way around: people, dogs, weather, pastries, location, ease of access from my house....I hope we do this one again!
